Our pre-show ritual almost always starts with us listening to some reggae. Roots and rocksteady stuff. Something about it just makes us super calm and just clears the negative energy out of our system. Nice to help keep the pre-show jitters to a minimum.
Then snacks are in order. Kettle corn. Ritz peanut butter sandwiches. Granola bars. Some kind of light snack that will make it so we aren’t hungry, but not too full either. Neither of us likes to play on a full stomach, so we try to eat super light. This ritual pretty much guarantees we will wind up eating some late-night tacos because when we’re done, we are always starving. Taco Bell is almost always on the agenda.
Then we make sure to get all the responsible band stuff out of the way. Stretch. Warm-up. Change batteries. You know, the boring stuff. We have to get that done because the next step is almost always the consumption of a few shots of whiskey. We both get pretty nervous, so no getting drunk, but we definitely have a little something to take the edge off.
Then we introduce ourselves to as many people in the room as we can before we start. It’s nice to shake hands, hug, and feel like we are playing for our new friends. It does a lot for making us comfortable, and it’s always so fun to meet everyone. It’s nice to feel connected before the show even starts, so we pretty much always do that, time permitting. Then it’s climb up on stage and get into it!
