A Lull – 3rd ROAD BLOG from their “Winter Tour 2012” With Deleted Scenes

When we drove east through El Paso, TX last night, you could look to the right side of I-10 and see lights far off in the distance, lights that I imagined were across the Mexican border in Juárez (Maybe you can’t see that far from the interstate, but pretend you maybe can). I don’t know much about Mexico, but from what little I’ve heard about the border area between the two countries in the last few years is that it can be pretty rough. So, as we were driving, I read a little about what’s happening lately in Juárez, Mexico.

After a quick Google search, I learned a few startling facts. Here are two of them: 1. Mexico City-based Citizen Council for Public Safety and Penal Justice ranked Juárez as the second-most-violent city in the world, behind San Pedro Sula, Honduras. 2. Eight police officers have been killed in Juárez so far this year (30 days).

What the hell is happening in those orange lights over there? Who is doing all of this stuff and why? Cartels and drugs, is the overly simple answer I guess, but shit.

I don’t really know what the point of all that is, other than to say that last night I was thinking that there’s bigger shit going on in the world and even within our eyesight (if those lights were Juárez lights) than these shows that we are playing in LA, San Diego and Tucson. Some perspective is good to have, I guess.

So, quickly on the last few days: The shows weren’t absolutely wonderful, but they weren’t horrible, by any means. The good news is that they were all three cities that we hadn’t played in previously, so any turnout is encouraging on some level. Over the last few days, we saw some old friends, and ate some good and bad food, hung out at the Pacific Ocean and drove through the desert overnight a couple of times, through one pretty wild, but relatively short sand storm. We have a week left and then we will be home.
