Performing live shows is my favorite part of being an artist. Nothing compares to interacting with a live audience. I haven’t had the opportunity to do a full tour yet, but from the shows I’ve played, there is this indescribable feeling I get when I see someone singing the words to my songs or sharing a story of how my music has touched their life in a positive way. As much as social media allows you to connect with fans, performing live shows creates the deepest connections for me. Looking back at some of my biggest musical influences, I do have a dream tour in my mind. Picture this: Cher, NSYNC, Bruno Mars, and The All-American Rejects – all on one tour. Including me. That’s my dream. Cher being the closing act of course. From Cher’s wardrobe, to NSYNC’s stage productions, to Bruno Mars’ choreography and the beautiful songs by The All-American Rejects – All of these artists have had such a huge impact on my life and the artist I am today. Sounds like a strange mix? I know. But in my mind, it’s an absolute DREAM.
I think every teenage girl had a crush on a boy band. NSYNC was mine. But my crush went beyond the looks, the songs, and the fact that they were formed in my home state of Florida. When I saw their concerts, it introduced me to a world of entertainment that I wanted to belong to. Their concerts weren’t just musical performances – they brought the audience on a journey and never did things half speed. The props they used were worked seamlessly into the choreography (i.e. “No Strings Attached”), and each song had its own theme. If anything, it really made me appreciate how much hard work must have been put into preparing for each show, and how much energy they give to their fans. I’m hoping if anyone can make an NSYNC reunion happen, it’s me!
The All-American Rejects is a group that has been such a big inspiration specifically to my songwriting. As a songwriter, I really try to bring my listeners on a story that they can relate to in an emotional way. The All-American Rejects, in my mind, are a group whose songs do that perfectly with never coming across generic. Some of their songs have gotten me through tough times in my life, and have also been part of some of the best times in my life. For that reason, they earn a big spot.
Bruno, to me, is this new breed of performer. He just exudes this coolness factor so effortlessly. I don’t think anyone is touching him right now in the performance area. From the music direction, to the wardrobe, to the smooth movement choreography – it all just works so perfectly. I don’t know a person who doesn’t like Bruno. His show has a great energy, and I think his Super Bowl performance was the best one in a long time. If you can play the Super Bowl, you can be on an Alexx Mack tour! ;-)
My admiration for Cher came from my mom. I was introduced to the music of Cher through my mom, who was also a performer. She showed me to be confident and comfortable in my own skin, and how to use fashion as an expression of identity. When Cher hits the stage, it seems as if she demands presence and attention without even trying. In a very male-driven industry, Cher was the first artist who really gave me the confidence to showing the most authentic side of me as an artist. A lot of my fashion sense pays homage to Cher – I always try to incorporate some sort of vintage element in what I wear. Closing out a show with Cher is something I would never get tired of. There you have it – the ultimate tour. See you on the road soon. Now who’s coming?!
