Picking bands for my dream tour lineup is a little tricky—my taste in artists is so eclectic, but for the purposes of this post I’ve picked a couple of my favorite artists whose musical styles wouldn’t sound insanely disjointed if they were all booked to play on the same stage in one night. Not sure where my music would fall within the lineup, but it would be a dream to share the stage with any of the artists I’ve picked (we’ll get to them in just a minute). I’ve always been fascinated with seeing how other artists make their music, so having the opportunity to perform with them and possibly learn more about their creative process would be amazing.
Bon Iver and James Vincent McMorrow
I grew up in a house where classic jazz music was always playing. I know that my own musical style has been influenced by my early exposure to artists like Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. But when I think back to the first musical artists whose voices struck me in a meaningful and personal way, I think of Bon Iver and James Vincent McMorrow. Both make albums that I could play on repeat and never tire of, and they’re both constantly evolving as artists meaning that their style is never stagnant. To watch Bon Iver and McMorrow perform live night after night, or to hop on stage to do some harmonies on JVM’s We Don’t Eat or Bon Iver’s Michicant would be amazing for me.
Matt Corby
I’ve noticed that a lot of the music that has stuck with me the longest stems from artists I discovered in my sophomore year of high school. At sixteen I would listen to Matt Corby’s Flame EP with my friends for hours on end during drives down to the beach. His song, Souls A’fire has to be one of my all time favorites. His live performances stand out to me in particular because he is a spectacular guitarist and has such a unique voice. Just to be around talent of his caliber would be really cool.
Lana Del Rey
I found one of my all-time favorite artists around the same time. I remember discovering Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die in high school and it quickly becoming the soundtrack to my sophomore year. By this point, I must have listened to that album a thousand times. I love the line she walks, lyrically, between abstract and concrete. Also just knowing that she experiences a lot of performance-related anxiety but is still out there doing her thing…I love it. She’s so dedicated to her craft and seems like such a genuine person, I’d love to be on the same tour with her–even if I was just there for coffee runs!
The Neighbourhood
I think I’d like to wrap up my dream tour lineup with a band I got into recently. I’d heard The Neighbourhood’s Sweater Weather when I was in high school, but I didn’t really get into them until this past summer. I think it’s awesome how loyal they are to their black-and-white aesthetic. I also love how they mix genres and incorporate them into something that is completely theirs. I’m always down for hip-hop/rap influences sounding through in pop jams, & that paired with really vibey, reverb-y guitar really makes for a cool sound. It would be really cool just have an actual band on tour: I feel like it’s not so common to have traditional instrument-wielding groups in the current pop music landscape.
So maybe it’s a little selfish, but I think my dream tour line up would be comprised of artists that I want to listen to every single night. Artists who I want to hang around and whose process I want to study and learn from. I couldn’t say where I would fit into a lineup that included Lana Del Rey, Bon Iver, James Vincent McMorrow, Matt Corby, Souls A’Fire, and The Neighbourhood, but you’re crazy if you think that wouldn’t be an unforgettable show.
