The few seconds right before you go on stage can be extremely nerve-wracking. Your palms get sweaty, the lights go down, and a rush of adrenaline courses through your veins. It is important that you channel this anxiety into energy that you utilize during your performance. Over the years, I have developed some pre-show rituals to do just that.
Often times I get super jittery before I go on stage. I have found that working out before I get ready for a performance Is extremely beneficial. I typically go on a short run or do some other cardio-based workout. Not only does exercise calm your mind and body, but it also opens up your airways, and provides you with the ability to perform your utmost vocal performance.
Another thing I do to help with the jitters is meditating. Deep breathing is something that I try to be mindful of and incorporate into my daily routines. I like to use the app “Headspace” to do a guided meditation. This is also the time where I like to set a mantra for the show. This helps put me into a positive mindset, which is evident in the performance.
The last thing that I always do before a show is to fuel my body with the proper nutrients that It needs to perform. This means eating a healthy, satisfying meal, and chugging a TON of water. In order to perform your best- it is important to feel your best too.
