I have had the pleasure of touring Europe two times with two dear artist friends of mine (Taylor Dukes and Caitlin Eadie). Our first go round was a bit more “roughing it”, and we independently booked all our accommodations without much knowledge or warning of what to expect. Traveling is exhausting enough as it is and gets exponentially more intense when carrying a keyboard on your back and bags in both hands (I was pretty ripped by the end of that tour, though!)
We arrived in Bristol sweaty and tired… cramming in and out of taxis… about ready to throw our instruments down a flight of stairs… but at the very least get into our air bnb. The host warned us that the cleaning service hadn’t yet arrived, but said we were welcome to drop off our belongings. While walking up the stairs to the front door, we were greeted with an appallingly offensive smell, which we realized with dread was coming from our current destination. We reluctantly entered and the stench of what can only be described as 4-week-old chinese food/dog farts/rotting carcas/hangover-poop hit HARD. The next few minutes are a bit hazy, I imagine the smell sent us into a mild state of shock and delirium, but the girls addressed opening every window possible and I somehow took on the responsibility of finding the smell’s source. My incredible deductive reasoning and investigative skills led me to the trashcan. I was right. I pulled out the bag to try and deal with the issue, and naturally the bag proceeded to explode all over the floor, yielding a variety of enticing items including (but not limited to) rotting food, dirty tissues, and used condoms. I approached the situation as you would a very large unfortunate dog shit with every trash bag available in the house, removed it as far away from the apartment as humanly possible, and began scrubbing every pore on my entire body with hand sanitizer. We were forced to leave the smell dungeon until it had a chance to air out, knowing that we would have to live with ourselves staying in an apartment that had clearly had quite the previous guestlist.
All I can say is we were ecstatic to have our second tour sponsored by Aloft Hotels.
