Thinking about our preshow thing let us come to the conclusion that it wasn’t actually a decision per se to do this or that. It rather became a ritual over time and is more like a string of operations.
After trying to learn the names of the local tech crew and tonight’s time table we are always up for a walk through the city we are playing at. It somehow clears our minds and brings us into a good mood for the evening. Back at the venue, we start the “lazy hour”: grabbing dinner, staring on our cell screens, and talking trash.
Twenty minutes before change-over we gather at the equipment and start our actual pre-show thing and go through some songs of the set, which could look a bit funny for those who are passing by. Because while doing our dry runs we’re usually humming the notes of the instrumental lines. Even when there’s a solo in it… haha. Looks funny and in fact: it is! That’s our way to warm up the vocal cords and to pump ourselves up for the show.
As we feel confident for our vocal cords we ultimately start to do some stretching and basic gym exercises to warm up our bodies. Because we’re quite an “active“ band while playing our set we have to do some practices before to loosen up and keep the blood rushing.
Then lights off, set-intro, high fives, and “combat mode“.
