Hans Zimmer
Before songwriting, my sole passion was scoring films. I fell in love with the music of John Williams, Alan Silvestri, Thomas Newman, James Horner, and Danny Elfman at a very young age. They showed me how powerful music can be at telling a story, conveying an emotion, and transporting an audience to an entirely different world. Hans Zimmer’s early-2000 score for Gladiator is a perfect example of how orchestral music can be combined with current electronic elements to create a body of music that feels modern, epic, larger than life, and beautiful. My dream concert would open up with an audio-visual segment scored by Hans Zimmer to grab the audience’s attention, engage their imagination, and send them on a transformative journey.
Gorillaz
I’m constantly trying to push myself creatively when it comes to producing, songwriting, and performing. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s musical and artistic vision for the Gorillaz has been a source of inspiration and reassurance for me as I develop my voice as an artist. Their work is a perfect example of how it’s possible to successfully break away from “pop” norms and formulas to create something genuinely exciting and authentic. I would love to have them take the “virtual stage” following Hans Zimmer and open their set with 2006’s “Feel Good Inc.” Their music and performance would only further pull the audience into the musical universe of the evening.
Chance The Rapper
Lately, I’ve been listening to Chance The Rapper on repeat. Whenever I hear and see him perform, I am captivated and inspired. His onstage presence feels like an extension of his music. I believe every word that he sings and am moved by the rich, left-of-center, soulful qualities of his songs. Chance is an example of the type of live musician I want to be: engaging, exciting, and entertaining. For my dream tour, I would love to see him jump on stage with the Gorillaz and open his set with “Sunday Candy”. The song’s quirky qualities would work brilliantly with the Gorillaz and would help shift the concert back to a more live/human element.
Coldplay
I’ve loved Coldplay’s rich musical textures and sweeping melodies since middle-school. I blasted Viva La Vida (like so many other millennials) on my speakers more times than I feel comfortable admitting. They have an ability to combine acoustic and electronic elements within their music that makes their songs feel massive yet approachable. I would love to have Coldplay take the stage following Chance and open their set with Speed Of Sound. Chris Martin’s showmanship and his band’s colorful performance would work so well with the tone of the evening, and it would be an honor to take the stage following their set.
