I’ve always maintained that, in terms of contemporary pop music, the four musicians listed below have written all the great songs. The rest of us songwriters and performers are just doing the best we can to follow in their footsteps. Below is my dream tour lineup, priming the stage for my ultimate headliner – Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.
SADE: My mother used to have old CDs and cassette tapes of Sade that she would play in her car. She used to tell me that she grew up listening to her, and would play her CDs on repeat as she fell asleep when she was a teenager. Listening to Sade always made me feel connected to my mother somehow, and Sade’s music became a huge influence and part of my identity. I surprised my mom and took her to see Sade live a few years ago, and after witnessing her peaceful energy, and her calm command of the stadium she played in, there’s no one I’d rather open the show with.
GEORGE MICHAEL: The Singing Greek. He’s a king to me, and another musician I grew up idolizing. “Amazing” was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. What a killer pop record and beautiful love letter. There’s an undeniable elegance to him, and when he’s onstage, he’s magnetic. You can’t look at anything or anyone else, and why would you want to?
PRINCE: Anyone who has an appreciation for Prince’s music loves life and loves love and just wants to devour the world whole. His lyrics never fail to move me, and no one can deny that he is one of the greatest live performers of all time. I was lucky enough to see him at Montreal’s Place Des Arts Theatre just a month before he died. He played 90 minutes alone onstage, with nothing but a big purple piano and his walking stick. The highlight of that night for me was when he covered “Waiting in Vain” – one of my favorite songs. Not a dry eye in the house. He was dynamic, on fire, funny, sweet, sexy, and captivating as ever. When he died, I cried all day. I played all his music and watched video after video on youtube of as many of his shows as I could get my hands on. Nothing Compares 2 His Royal Badness.
QUEEN: Does it get any closer to performative achievement than Freddie Mercury Live at LIVE AID circa 1985? I’ve read so many accounts that detail people talking about seeing Queen live. They’d always say of Freddie; he could even make the fans in the nosebleeds feel like he was singing to them, and even seeing them from his vantage point on the stage. That’s a true performer in my opinion. Combined with that signature powerhouse voice of his – that incomparable angel in his throat – and his undeniable sex appeal, there’s nobody I’d rather have priming the stage for my ultimate headliner.
SINATRA: Chairman of the Board. The one and only. Who else could headline my dream tour but Frank? It’s as simple as this – I adore him. That velvety voice. That classic demeanor. The naughty, cheeky humor and the jokes he cracks between songs. He flies when he sings, and he takes everyone with him as he goes – up, up, and away.
