Back in our early days when we were on a West Coast run, I remember playing up in Walnut Creek at a venue I really liked called the “Red House” (RIP). Between the long days writing our album and staying up long nights recording, and then preparing merch for the show, I was exhausted…bordering on delirious. The show turned out amazing. Great energy, great crowd. It was one of our better shows to that point.
After the show, I had two choices: pass out like my body was begging me to, or party. As I was happily on my way back to the van to lay down, my attention was stolen by this really cute girl who had made eye contact with me several times throughout the night. She asked me if I wanted to grab a drink. Like all of my bad decisions, I went with the cute girl and I said the phrase that always seems to get me into trouble: “ehhh…why the hell not?!”
Fighting sleep deprivation, it only took me 2 drinks to feel too woozy to function, but I pushed on. After a few more drinks, I knew I was going to be hurting the next morning. We eventually ended our night back at the room. Things were getting pretty foggy by this point, and I remember thinking “all I want is this bed right now, should I ask her to leave?”…but that same phrase repeated in my mind once again: “ehhhh…why the hell not?!”
We have another drink. She turns off the lights. When I feel her sit back down on the bed, we lean in to kiss each other…and that’s when it happens…my front tooth got knocked out! I was so tired and tipsy that I fell forward too fast, violently hitting my mouth against hers, and knocking out my front tooth! There was blood all over the white sheets! I was too tipsy to feel embarrassed and too tired to care, so we went right back to business, bloody mouth and all. The next day, I had an emergency appointment with a dentist to get it repaired and I spent the next year in recovery from a full dental implant.
The best part about this is Justin, our bassist, snapped a photo of me smiling with a missing front tooth and saved it in his phone so every time I call him, that is what shows up. I am forever haunted.
