My pre-show ritual is a must every night. After I eat a delicious meal provided by the promoter/club (pizza is not a meal) I head to the bunk for my pre-show nap. This the most important part of the day. If show time is at 10:00pm my nap is a strict 2 hour 6 to 8pm. Tommy (drummer) is on the same schedule.
Once I wake up I immediately rush to my pack of Marlboro lights and Diet Coke stash. After my unhealthy intake, I begin to comb through the birds nest that has appeared on the back of my head from the nap. Then I wash my face, shave, brush my teeth, and look for the secret bathroom in the club. A lot of times the secret bathroom doesn’t exist. If that’s the case I have to clean the set of the public toilet that all the club goers have pissed on. You get used to it.
Once all of the fun stuff is out of the way, it’s time to warm up the voice. I do a 7-minute exercise that I found on YouTube. Dave Tipple (lead guitar/vocals) joins me in this event. It calms our nerves and gives us a false notion that we are now prepared for the 90 minute set ahead.
We have now reached the point in the evening where all the responsible actions have been accomplished.
This is when the cold bottle of Jäger and cans of Red bull hit the kitchen table of the bus. The guys have named me the all time bartender. I distribute shots while we all decide on the set list for the evening. We never know what we are going to play until about 30 minutes before show time. We discuss, we drink, we tell jokes that outsiders wouldn’t get. We are lost in the moment. Before we know it our tour manager (Nathan Jones) herds us into the club and its time for serious business. No more jokes, no more laughing. We take the stage and the place explodes!!
