Gonna take you way back to Los Angeles, California circa 1997 when I was but a wee freshman in high school. Erik Jepsen and I were huge Steve Miller Band fans. Man, we wore out that greatest hits cd! You know the one; a blue, windblown horse on the cover with so many of their hit tunes, from “Joker” and “Fly Like An Eagle” to “Swingtown” and “Jungle Love.” It was the soundtrack to the advent of our formative years.
The concert was at the famed Greek Theater; a gorgeous, outdoor venue tucked into the rolling hills of Griffith Park. Erik’s dad, an SMB fan himself, signed on to chaperone us 14-year-olds that evening. I remember Pat Benatar being the opening act. Just as the sun descended into the sea, Steve and his band took the stage with a powerhouse performance of “Rock N’ Me,” and we were off! All these years later, I still remember that thaumaturgic night.

Keep up with him on Instagram.
