1) Hygiene: Try not to stink like a cliché band dude. Bathing on the road is infrequent at best, one trick we’ve picked up to keep feeling fresh is to at least wash our faces everyday. Truck stops and fast food bathrooms are everywhere. Learn to take advantage of their hot water. Buy deodorant and baby powder/talcum powder (you know what for). Smelling like crap isn’t cool and you’re giving all musicians a bad name by perpetuating the stereotype.
2) “Let it slide”: You are going to get into a lot of disagreements about completely pointless and irrelevant things like ‘movie star/movie’ factoids or who’s turn it is to play their iPod. Tolerance, patience and forgiveness will get you a lot further than bickering and resentment. Learning to ‘let it slide’ also applies to a tough tour schedule. It’s important to understand that you are going to have good nights and bad nights. You are going to play terrible shows to large crowds and incredible shows to empty rooms. It’s important to be okay with these ups and downs. In tough times like these, a band can also find comfort in the words of some of the great musicians that have shared the same experiences before them. For this purpose, I’ll bring our attention to this little nugget of wisdom bestowed upon us by no other than Smash Mouth: “Hey now, you’re a Rock Star, get the show on, get paid.” Very little money.
3) “For your health!”: Try to masturbate at least once a week. I know you are constantly surrounded by the same smelly group of guys (or girls?) but when you grab some alone time, be sure to clear the pipes. This will deliver mental clarity, stop you from cheating on your girlfriend and lessen the chances of tween style wet dreams.
4) Foodie: Treat yourself to a nice meal every once in a while. Don’t rely on sugar and crack-juice (coffee and Redbull). Invest in a cooler where you can store healthy snacks and ingredients for sandwiches, etc. It’s so important to eat as healthy as possible and what a better way than to treat yourself to some of the local cuisine in all the new and exciting places you visit. YOU CAN GET 30 CENT OYSTERS IN NEW ORLEANS!!!!!
5) Home away from Home: Bring a tent. Some of our fondest memories from tour involve pulling into a campsite, having a dip and playing music by the fire. Not to mention the fact that you can save a butt load of cash by not staying in a hotel.
