One of my favorite stories was the first day of the Carnival of Madness Tour 2012. CAVO was 2nd on that tour, and Evanescence were the headliners. The FIRST day of the tour, I realized I needed something from our bus so I ran back and entered our bus, or so I thought. I got to “bunk alley” when I realized…. This is NOT our bus. Just as I was realizing this, Amy Lee, singer of Evanescence, peeked her head out of her bunk and said: “Can I Help You?” It was then I realized I had gotten on the Evanescence bus by mistake. I hadn’t met Amy yet and wasn’t sure what to say so I literally said “CAVO…. drummer…. Lost.” Talk about a first impression. Right, then Amy’s security guard got on the bus and started yelling at me. Luckily for me, Amy was really sweet and explained to him I had gotten on the wrong bus. The funniest part about all of this is our bus was black and Amy’s was white…..
Another crazy road story that comes to mind was my first show with CAVO. We opened for Three Days Grace and Black Stone Cherry in Iowa. I must’ve been kind of nervous because I came off the click track during a song called “Live Without It”….. RIGHT before the guitar solo, causing Chris Hobbs to have to play it at lightning speed. I do remember a kid in the front row having his mind blown through watching Chris shred like a true guitar hero. I walked off the stage so mad at myself for messing up my first show, and all of the sudden a girl jumped the barricade and asked for my autograph. I signed it but as I did I said: “I’ll sign your shirt, but this was probably my only show with the band”. Luckily that wasn’t the case and here I am all these years later.
One last crazy road story. CAVO played in upstate NY with Halestorm. The show was sold out and awesome. After the show, Pookee Jones and I are hanging out by the bar, having some drinks, and signing some stuff. At one point we signed a woman’s leg and her drunken boyfriend didn’t take to kindly to that. He proceeded to try and fight Pookee and myself. As Pookee and exchanged words, I tried to calm the situation down by raising my hand up and saying “whoa”…… Something Pookee still makes fun of me for to this day…. Even though I’m pretty sure that was a tough guy move on my part. Eventually, security escorted the dude out…. By dragging him. Haha. So we went back to enjoying ourselves and signing whatever autographs we felt like signing.
Being on the road is one of the best parts of being in a band. The stories, good and bad, are what make it worth it.
