1. Don’t take too many days off. It gets expensive…plus you’ll keep playing better and better if you’ve got a show every night. “If you’re not playing, you’re paying.” -Mike Watt
2. If you have time, check out something that is unique to the city where your show is. Stop at the MoMA in New York…the Book Depository Building in Dallas, Texas…eat an apple from Wenatchee, Washington…maybe swim in the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon.
3. Pick up a copy of the local alternative newspaper. The Portland Mercury, L.A. Weekly, Denver’s Westword. You can learn the names of some local bands and a bunch about the music and art scenes and maybe what you could do better next time you come through town.
4. Get some sleep, somehow. There’s a lot of exciting stuff going on but you’ve got to leave the party sometimes or you’ll burn out.
5. Support the bands you’re playing with…watch their set, at the very least. Maybe trade CD’s and keep in touch. That’s what it’s all about!
