In this Preshow Rituals segment, the rock duo, cleopatrick, share what they do before every show. You can check out their rituals, after the break.
Caffeine is cleopatrick’s catalyst when it comes time to enter gig mode, so our pre-show ritual begins with one essential step: Two double-doubles and a couple nice pastries from Tim Hortons. Then we hop in the minivan and talk about our feelings.
The next essential step involves the careful programming of a consistently banging playlist for our travels. The person in the passenger seat is given the golden responsibility of keeping the “fat tunes” coming as we barrel down the 401. Lately, our playlists have been especially bumping. For example, we’ve been rocking out to:
The new Ready the Prince EP “Note to Self”
PUP (of course)
The Dirty Nil’s “Minimum R&B” collection
And “Within Waves” EP by our homies The Kents!
Once we arrive at the venue, we have our own ways of getting ready:
Ian: As a ritual, I like to warm up and do a few stretches with my sticks. My warm-ups include various rudiments, and also playing super hard/fast until my forearms burn. I have poor circulation in my hands so I find myself doing anything to keep them warm.
Luke: I like to chill out before we play. I set up our merch, post some social media updates, maybe even cash in a drink ticket if I’m feeling wild. Sometimes I’ll do some vocal warmups if I’m worried about my voice that night, but truth be told I’m pretty neglectful and don’t do that very often.
In the final moment leading up to hitting the stage, Ian will say to Luke “let’s make this the best show ever” — and then we play.
