Scott Lane (guitar, vocals) and I have a hilarious history of tour pranks, except it’s usually only Scott getting pranked. One of my favorites was at a festival in Bend, OR. We were setting up our gear when a nice gentlemen approached me to introduce himself and inquire about our band. He was the keyboardist of the band playing before us and he looked almost identical to celebrity super-chef Anthony Bordain. I mean, it was freakishly cunning.
I decided to capitalize on this opportunity and told Scott that it was, in fact, Anthony. I took it a bit over the top and told Scott that he and I discussed the balance of his time between his cooking show, world traveling, his multiple restaurants, and of course, his pseudo-bluegrass/indie rock band playing the side stage tweener set at this random festival in Oregon.
Well, needless to say, Scott was pumped. He was running around the festival telling people. He was making up ideas in his head about how Anthony is a now fan of the band and how he may endorse us – perhaps even play our tunes on his show. I let this go on for an hour or so in total delight.
I made sure to have the whole band around when I broke the heartbreaking news to Scott. He said something along the lines of, “You butthole!” and walked away, completely demoralized and deceived. It was a win for Speas. Good stuff.
Keep up with the band on Facebook and Twitter!
