In this Preshow Rituals segment, the hard rock band, Cowboy Meets Pirate, reveals what they do before taking the stage. You can check out the story, after the break.
Right before our gigs, if you look around you’ll see in each corner one member of Cowboy Meets Pirate warming up! On one side there’s Mic, the guitar player, doing some push-ups, jumping jacks or some shadow boxing to loosen up. In another corner there’s Dice, the bass (easier guitar) man, doing some legs, arms and wrist stretches, and warm-ups. Then there’s Aaron air drumming! As for our lead singer, he goes from wholeheartedly singing songs in the car to mumbling melodies under his breath while prepping for the show! In brief, we like to get the blood flowing in any way possible!
On top of our various warm-ups, we all have our pre-show quirks, here’s what each member does without fail!
Jawny: For me, the pre-show ritual starts early in the day. I shut my phone off, do my hair and grab some rockin’ clothes (Usually takes me 20min just to choose an outfit since my mind is so scattered on show days). When I finally make it to the venue, I introduce myself to the other featured bands as well as the working staff…and before I know it, it’s time to go on stage!
Dice: I grab a light beer, tune my bass, grab another beer then practice switching from slap bass parts to picking bass parts. After gathering my thoughts, I grab my third beer of the day (yes I keep count) and I’m ready to step on stage!
Mic: I like to practice some stage moves in front of a mirror to really nail them on stage! A little meditation and visualization of how I would like the show to go and my mind is clear/set for the gig!
Aaron: In a way like a prayer, I verbalize my intention to a force larger than me for the power to perform, control and have a steady rhythm. I also keep a small batch of gemstones on me to channel stage energy (amethyst, citrine, and obsidian)
Although we each have our own rituals, 15 minutes before stepping on stage we huddle up, visualizing how we’re gonna rock the crowd …and, of course, take a shot of the cheapest whiskey the venue has to offer! (usually compliments of Dice). Best of all.. we made a goofy video about our pre-show rituals… here’s our last Friday Funkery!
