Well first things first, I always take a shower and start my warm-up in there. You get such good resonance in the shower and who doesn’t love singing in the shower. Then I get out, meditate and take some time to center. That time is a must, twice or sometimes three times before I go onstage; anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes at a time. Meditation is a super important part of my routine. After that, I will usually do some push-ups and sit-ups to get the endorphins flowing which is always a good idea before you get on stage.
Next I step into hair and makeup with my backup singers. I have two backup singers and they get ready with me before each show and we hang out and order food and have our hair and makeup done and listen to music and warm up together. It’s really fun!
The entire time, especially the entire day of the show, I will be drinking my specialty tea. It is fresh ginger, mint, honey, and lemon with hot water poured over it and I drink that religiously when I am performing and while I’m getting ready before a show for sure! I also love something called bee propolis. I get it in this little jar and it’s kind of like a paste. It’s very good for the throat and for repairing and rebuilding tissue and for immunity. Also, I take a vitamin called Golden Voice which is a mix of ancient Chinese herbs that have been used by opera singers for centuries. It has the perfect combination for the throat and is essential for maintaining vocal health especially when performing and touring, in my opinion.
Once hair and makeup are done I get into my outfit for stage and my backup singers and I take a moment to center together and just soak in where we are and what we are about to do so that we can give the best performance possible. Then we head to the venue.
I usually warm up in the car on the way with some technical exercises and also just singing fun songs by some of my favorite artists which varies depending on my mood. It could be anything from No Doubt to Bowie to Queen to Radiohead to Rihanna…I love so many different artists. Then I get there and hit the stage!
