I’ll go ahead and skip the classic “van breaking down in Latvia on our way to play a festival” or the slightly more interesting “I almost got thrown off of a flight from Norway for talking during the safety announcement” and go straight to the story about our bus driver in Slovakia.
The band and I flew into Vienna and had to travel a couple of hours across the Slovakian border to get to the festival site. 5 band members plus all of our gear and they pick us up in a minivan. Great. We were driving on a major highway and whizzing past cars left and right. We were a bit distracted because of our very intense game of Risk on my phone, but pretty soon it became evident that this driver is a bit of a daredevil. While speeding around 150 km/h he decides to start texting on his phone and begins to sway towards the railing on the highway. I’m in the backseat and tell the driver politely to keep his eyes on the road. He puts his phone down and we continue with our game of Risk. Just as I conquer all of Asia the whole band screams, because our driver is texting again, but now we have swayed into oncoming traffic! Our bassist, Kata, who was 4 months pregnant and sitting right next to him, spent the rest of the drive staring at this guy with a deadly look I wouldn’t even want my worst enemy to have to witness. But, we made it to the festival and had one of the best crowds we’ve ever seen.
