I once organized a regional tour in the state of New South Wales, Australia. I booked all of the gigs myself but was unfamiliar with pretty much all of the venues, so I decided to do some research into where other artists had played. An acoustic guitar playing singer/songwriter I knew who played similar music to me at the time had played some shows in a pub in *unnamed NSW country town* (I’d rather not sully the reputation of this otherwise charming place). I figured it would most likely be a good fit for me.
Apparently, I should have done more research. Essentially this was a super blokey Aussie country pub. It was almost exclusively middle-aged men, and I can tell you from my Spotify stats that middle-aged men are not my target demographic. To make matters even more interesting, there was a very large group of bikies (Aussie term for people who ride motorcycles) riding through the town that night who decided to stop over at the venue. It was a packed house, 100 LOUD beer-drinking blokes, who were thoroughly uninterested in hearing my acoustic indie/pop! I knew it, they knew it, but of course, the show must go on…
It was a rough gig, but now I can laugh about it. It really is those terrible gigs that makes the good ones extra good.
On the way out the next morning, we had breakfast at this cute cafe, full of lovely ladies (and some lovely dudes too), young and old. It was a warm welcoming place and I realized that there were people who would be interested in my music living in this very town, they just don’t have a place to come see it! The only music venue was this old guard, hard Aussie pub. Which is when I learned the very valuable lesson that the venue truly can make or break a gig!
