There’s the song, the album art, the twitter feeds, the Instagram posts, the Snapchat filters…the list goes on; so many different ways to “experience” an Artist today but, let’s be honest, nothing competes with a live show – both for the audience, and the performers. It’s the raw visceral nature of it all, there’s nothing to hide: Can you deliver on the “musical promise” you’ve made?
As a performing musician you get to see the best, and the worst, of the touring experience. Even when creating a record, there are flutters of the anticipation of how it will be executed live and, in it’s most grand moments, whom you might perform it with. Again, let’s be honest, if you’re a musician…you have a “dream tour”:
The Japanese House:
A new Synth Pop favorite of mine – The Japanese house is a luscious combination of memorable lyrics and thick vocal harmonies. This is the kind of Artist that feels like a good “Sonic” match for me, and that’s important. Delivering a live show is an artist’s expression in and of itself; having complementary aesthetics keeps the audience engaged, but not bored. I’ve never actually heard The Japanese House live, but I love the records, and I think that’s also part of the fun: Loving to listen to the people you’re on the road with!
Oliver:
No…not the Broadway musical cast (entertaining as it may be), the LA based Producer duo. Songs like “Night is on my mind”, “Control”, and “Electrify” are some favorites. Say what you want about a DJ setup and whether or not it’s truly “live performance”, their songs consistently deliver. They are constantly turning the typical on its head, and it’s made me a dedicated fan. Again, it’s a selfish choice of fandom (it is my dream tour after all) however, I think I could learn a lot from them.
Disclosure:
This almost needs no explanation…I mean “latch”, come on! These two have managed to bridge live performance and DJ performance into this mesmerizing, unapologetic live set. They capture audiences every time they play and they’re scalable; it can be a club, it can be a stadium, it always works.
Rae Sremmurd:
It’s a “left turn”, I know. Every time they release a song, it seems to redefine pop music. I hate to use the term “they’re on the pulse” but, they are. They’re young, and they’re generating this wave of creative viral energy that doesn’t sound like anything else. Not to mention, you can’t tell me that their shows aren’t a party! We definitely have different audiences but, I bet people that are listening to me are *getting-down* on Friday nights to their songs.
The Weeknd:
Who else could close this show? Haha!
The Weeknd is everywhere, in everything. He’s creating compelling music that is connecting with fans of all genre’s. To me, more than just the hit music, his compelling dedication to all things “visual” is what makes him a must; everything he does is dark and yet still accessible. He’s committed to the vision of how he views himself and believes that every element of his persona is art. I think those combinations make for a powerful live presence, and I can’t imagine anyone else executing as well as he is right now!
I know what you’re thinking: It’s a long show, with some twists and turns…But I would buy a ticket to this concert! And I would certainly love being on this “Dream Tour” every night.
Keep up with the artist on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
