Hey DTB Readers!
I’m Nico and I play drums for Miami’s garage rock duo, Deaf Poets. Sean and I have been friends since the 5th grade, so we have plenty of crazy/funny stories. One of my favorite stories while on the road happened after we played one of our favorite venues in North Carolina, The Garage in Winston-Salem. After the gig, we were having trouble finding a place to crash for the night. Our manager Nat was able to find a hotel just a few miles from the venue for $30 a night.
The first night of our stay was fairly normal. The room was set up with a kitchen and living room area. Once we settled in our room, we did what every person does and opened everything up. In the kitchen cabinets, we found a roach from a blunt casually placed on top of the plates. Not necessarily weird, but once I elaborate the next series of events, it should help paint the picture of the kind of establishment we were staying in.
After our home made dinner, I excused myself to the bathroom. As I was minding my own business in there, the entire light fixture on top of the mirror falls off the wall and shatters all around me. Needless to say, we all went on a laughing rampage as I was sitting on the toilet unable to move. We inform the front desk and move on from the situation. About an hour later, Nat went to the bathroom to take a shower. Moments later, we heard a scream coming from the shower… “SEAN! SEAN! THE TOILET IS OVERFLOWING!!!” The entire bathroom was flooding with sewage water! Tell you what, she def called the right person because I did not want to deal with the poop water. A mixture of laughter and panic enveloped the room as we were trying to get all our stuff out dry.
We told the front desk about the situation and they informed us that the only room available is on the smoking floor. None of us smoke cigarettes but we’ve played enough bars that we can get past the smell.
We’ve arrived at our floor and there was this layer of smoke thicker than the “Thriller” music video. We walked down the hallway and all we could hear were people arguing from inside their room extremely aggressively. As we turned the corner, we started hearing a very loud and familiar sound. The sound of lovemaking was so rambunctious that there was no way it was that good! And if it was, I would like to personally congratulate the couple on what sounded like an amazing time.
We couldn’t wait for the sun to come up and head to our next show. We slept with our clothes on to make the checkout quicker. To this day Nat won’t admit she clogged the toilet and that hotel will always have a special place in our hearts.
We always have a good time retelling this story and we hope you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
Nico
