This new set of Tour Tips was written by the hardcore band, Defeater. You can check out their tips for being on the road, after the break.
- Get out of the venue for a bit: Just leave. Walk out the door and pick a direction. Some of our favorite tour memories are finding some random park, restaurant, bar, squat, castle, skatepark, or whatever, just because we took the time to explore a little. Nothing alleviates feeling like all you’ve seen are the inside of a bunch of venues like seeing things that aren’t the inside of venues.
- Sleeping is cooler than not sleeping: If your tour is longer than two weeks, you’re gonna need to learn how to take care of yourself a little. Eat an apple. Maybe jump rope. But most importantly, try and get enough sleep. You won’t, but it’s worth a shot.
- Get off your phone and read a book or listen to a podcast: You’ll be around people 24/7- make sure you’re doing something other than listening to the kind of music you play and constantly talking about nothing. Otherwise, your brain will shrivel up like a prune and leave you stranded.
- Call home, whoever and wherever that is.
- Bring an empty vinyl mailer: Nothing worse than finding records on the road and then having them get wrecked in the van. Most shops can give you one, but just in case, I try to toss one of these in my suitcase or under the back bench.
