1. Take things that remind you of home
On my first night on a tour bus, one of the girls I was traveling with produced some lavender oil and sprayed some on my pillow. She said it makes her feel better when she’s missing home and d’you know what? It really worked! It reminded me of my Auntie’s house and made me feel really comfortable and cozy. When you’re packing, make room for a couple of things that will give you that homely feeling. On a tour bus, you’re essentially sharing your bedroom with 10-15 other people and it can sometimes feel like you don’t have your own space at all. Take things away with you that are sentimental and personal to just you. It will make you feel more at home.
2. Take time to see the city you’re in
Sometimes being on the road can be so busy that you don’t manage to actually take in the incredible cities you’re playing in. Even if it’s a half hour walk, I like to get out in each city I visit and see parts of the world I’d never normally get to see.
Go out, meet people, drink local beers, try cuisines you wouldn’t normally try… it’s what keeps touring interesting and exciting! It’s important to remember how lucky you are to be traveling, doing what you love doing.
3. Eat healthily
When you’re on tour, the temptation to eat quick, easy, junk food can be huge. I personally think it’s vital to maintain a healthy diet when you’re on the road. It benefits you not only physically but, mentally too. I find that eating loads and fruit and veg and drinking plenty of water keeps me energized and feeling focused, which is then reflected in my performance. Of course, you have to allow yourself a few vices too…
4. Look after your voice
If you’re a singer on tour, it’s super important to keep your vocals on point for every show. I find the best way to preserve my voice on the road is by staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and not going too hard on the booze! Of course on tour there’s always the option to have drinks after a show but, for me, having a hangover and giving a top performance are two things that do not go hand in hand. It might seem like a great idea at the time but, alcohol can definitely be very damaging. Treat your voice well, it’d be a pretty terrible tour if the singer couldn’t sing.
5. Stay creative
When you’re playing the same set every night, with very little variation, it can feel monotonous and it might be hard to keep your mind working creatively. I always like to find time to do some writing or practice my instruments. Remember that when you’re done with being on the road, you’ll more than likely be hitting the studio to work on the next project. Stay inspired. Be influenced by your travels and the people around you and use how you’re feeling to write that next hit song!
