1. Headphones
If you’re like me, you need to have your headphones on you at all times. Putting on headphones create a safe space for me to tune out whatever noise may be going on. So, tune out and chill, listen to your favorite music, podcast, or audiobook and take a second outside of your own mind!
2. Yoga mat / spiritual practice
Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is one of the most important tips I could give anyone on tour. Whether you do yoga or not, you’ll be doing yourself a favor in the long run if you stretch, meditate, workout, or do whatever you need to do physically/mentally to help you feel good. My favorite time to stretch is right before bed to help relax my body and open up my muscles. I feel the difference in my mental state when I practice being present. And it becomes easier for me to let go of stress when I let go of that energy physically.
3. Running shoes
If you’re a performer like myself, you will need comfortable shoes with good support to be able to survive long hours and many days of dancing. Also, if I have the time, I like to go for a walk or a run in every new city I visit… once I’ve settled I like to book it right out of the hotel. There’s no better way to see a new city than on foot, and you can get some fresh air, get the blood flowing, and take it all! Maybe even visit a museum or park!
4. Pre-show
Being prepared has to be a priority if you want to feel good about your performance. Drink plenty of water the night before, get enough sleep, and vocalize! I love chopping up some fresh ginger, throwing it into hot water with some raw organic honey. Let that yummy tea warm up your vocal chords! Now, of course, you should stretch, shake it out, give yourself and your team a pep talk… and do not forget to appreciate the moment!
5. Eat healthy
On my first tour, the biggest mistake I made was eating Hot Cheetos, Twix bars and drinking beer almost every day. Trust me, I know it’s hard because you think you can work it off tomorrow… but then you wake up and realize you didn’t get enough sleep, you didn’t drink water and you’re bloated! It’s easy to eat and drink like shit until you really feel it and see it the next day. I can’t stress enough how important it is to eat clean, fresh and healthy meals. Stop at a grocery store and stock up on fresh fruit, juices, nuts and seeds, and most importantly, water. Hydration and clean eating is absolutely key to keeping your mind clear and your energy up ?
