On gig day, I basically just try to take it easy. Get a good sleep, do a nice full-body stretch, and let the steam from a lovely hot shower loosen up my vocal chords. I’ll warm up a bit in the shower (Singers, if you haven’t tried this, you’re missing out. The steam + bathroom reverb goes together like PB&J), and then a more thorough vocal exercise before I head to the venue.
When I get to the venue, I try not to think about my performance at all until I’m right about to walk on stage. I like to familiarize myself with the venue, the crowd, and the other artists. I’ll hang with my band and any friends that come out to support, and chat up a few of the people working at the venue. I think that befriending the bartender, the person working the door, and DEFINITELY the sound-person makes me feel a little more relaxed in the room, which, for me, is a very important thing. After spending the last few weeks rehearsing and preparing, I (hopefully) feel confident about my music, it’s just the other aspects of the show that I want to get comfortable with.
After all of that prep, it’s show time! Chug a beer, get on stage, and play the music I’ve been working so hard to perfect. This is the fun part that makes all those tedious octave slides and weirdo face stretches worth it.
