The first concert I ever went to was a Warped Tour. The band I was excited to see was the great skate-punk band Suicidal Tendencies. A strange lineup change happened last second though: cypress hill dropped off the bill and was replaced by an unknown Eminem promoting his first album, the Slim Shady LP.
I was a little kid and just excited to be there because I’d never seen a big ass live show with famous bands before, and I loved skateboard culture, but the rest of the crowd was a lot more critical.
They were handing out these free cups of water that had a lemon wedge in each one, and the crust punks were taking those and pelting Eminem and D12 mc Proof with them while they tried to get through the short, quirky set. Eminem tried to reason with the crowd who matched his enthusiasm with a chant of “PENNYWISE! PENNYWISE!” Who were to go on after. “Fuck YOU Vancouver, I’m out!” Em said as he left the stage early. It was sad, in retrospect.
Later in the evening, I met Ice T, who was there with his rap-metal band Body Count. I was a little kid and way taller than him, which was also sad to me.
Going to concerts is sad.
