Getting ready to perform usually requires a combination of elements for me. I have a series of things that I do right before going out onstage – Meditation, visualization, stretching, movement, prayer, a little bit of whiskey, and a quiet moment of intentional, specific gratitude. During the day I will usually find a quiet place to journal and duck into whatever book I’m reading at the moment. Mid-afternoon wait times call for coffee or playing a round of “catchphrase” with bandmates and FaceTime with friends at home. I get too much in my head sometimes, so fun things that put me in the moment are always good.
I read once about an author once who, before going to speak at events, would visualize her soul as a tree whose roots were strong and sure, and her branches reached out past the end of the auditorium. It created such a peaceful feeling for me so I try to return to that visual every night before going on a stage. It takes the pressure off of the performance and makes me feel small and included in whatever magic is about to happen.
