Hey all, we are Family of Things. Our crazy tour story is a little different than most, but it’s too good not to mention. Pre-Family of Things, we were backing another artist (which will be known as X for this segment). This story begins on one of those uncomfortable breakfast television shows. We were excited to play, showing up bright and early to load-in, setup, and sound check before the count in. As it generally goes, the TV program was not prepared to receive us at our scheduled time, and after an hour of waiting, we were finally escorted in. This gave us just enough time for an ill prepared set-up and sound check.
Due to their request, we ran everything direct-in (organ/synth, bass, and acoustic guitar) and had to rely on their tiny monitors for everything, but electric guitar and the acoustic drums. They counted us down and we began to play. No more than half a second into the song, all of our monitors cut out. We could no longer hear anything, but the sound of the drums and electric guitar. There was no vocals, no organ or synth, no bass, and definitely no acoustic guitar. A little shook by this technical disaster, we all looked at each other and knew we had to continue to play with confidence and energy; and play we did! Upon finishing our song, we glanced at each other once more, acknowledging that we had made it through error free…or so we thought! X (who had been playing the acoustic guitar and singing lead vocals) turned around with complete terror written over his face. He then shamefully explained that he played half of the song with the capo on the wrong fret, and did not realize until the bridge when he could faintly hear his guitar again!
We quickly packed up, left the studio and then ran to the first place we could find with wi-fi. We gathered around the computer in hopes that the performance was not as disastrous as X had described… Sadly, it was much worse! Without trying, X had created his own shreds music parody video that was performed live on national television. To make matters worse, the only time the camera zoomed in on his guitar, was when he realized his mistake, and moved his capo to the correct fret. Shortly after, we parted ways and began our own journey as Family of Things.
