Summer of 2012 we were on the road and stopped in the lovely town of Ashtabula, OH to play a big fun house show. After a fun day at the lake and checking out their lovely ‘mall’ (more like a glorified flea market), we headed over to the house for a fun night of grilling, playing football, and of course a big house show. The host of the house was great, all the kids who came out were great, and it was shaping up to be a fun night!
After splitting up all the bands playing and some fans who wanted in, we decided to play a fun game of touch football in this big empty field behind the house. All was fair and fun, and everyone seemed to enjoy it except for one person; the dog. There was a super sweet but rather large and skittish pit bull who was running around the yard eating burnt hot dogs off the ground and sniffing people’s fresh merch. When we neared the end zone, this big bruiser of a pup decided he wanted to play safety.
As I (Zach, guitar) ran in for the touchdown pass, I received not only a pig skin to the head but a dog’s lock jaw to the ass. This pit bull did NOT like my juke and took his teeth straight to my right butt cheek. I’m not talking a flesh wound, he got in there deep. Split my ass open about two inches long in two places and deep enough to see fat tissue and dark purple blood. After he tore off part of my favorite camo swimsuit (RIP) he bolted for the garage because he most likely knew he was in trouble.
I didn’t freak out on the dog or the owner, so don’t think this turned into a horror story where we were drama queens and cancelled our set and made a big deal out of it. I honestly didn’t care, I love dogs unconditionally. Only thing was it hurt like shit and there was a good amount of blood and we were playing in less than an hour (not to mention I didn’t have health insurance so I couldn’t have done much anyways). We poured some bottled water on it, wrapped some duct tape around it, and played an amazing set in this dude’s kitchen to a ton of loving and supporting fans. I was limping and the sweat was stinging my gashes super bad, but I sucked it up for the punks.
After our set, Andrew (vocals, guitar, best-friend) took the van to Walmart and got some iodine, Band-Aids, and antiseptic. Upon his return we had about 35 kids gather around our merch table in the backyard with their phones to photograph me bent over and Andrew spreading my butt and cuts open to get the iodine deep in there. The burning of the iodine was unreal, and it stained my leg for about a week, but it kept the cut clean and myself infection free. The rest of tour sitting in the van for hours on end was awful, but I survived. Fingers Crossed always finds a way to tough up and deal with anything we face, and it’s always good to have a friend to touch your butt in your time of need.
