My pre-show rituals can depend on how much time I have that day before the show. If I’m able to sleep in, I will absolutely do so. I like waking up and getting to it, but I could sleep all day long if I have the chance, especially since I’m kind of a night owl. Also, if I have the chance I’ll try and hit the gym for some calisthenics. The other day I was in the hotel gym working out in my jeans, docs, and a t because I forgot to pack workout gear!
Once we get to the venue, we’ll soundcheck and in between our soundcheck and the show, I’ll kind of lounge around and have a few drinks. Then I’ll start to get hyped up and make my team members do push-ups with me. We have to do a minimum of 15 but somehow we always end up doing more. I don’t like to eat before the show but sometimes if we’re in a new city or someone brings us food, I’ll dive in. Otherwise, I save the food for after the show. Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t really eat on show days… When it gets close to heading out, I’ll drink some throat coat to soothe my throat, and right before we take the stage I have my team circle up. All hands go in the circle. We start low with this low hum and build as our hands go up, ending with all of our hands raised and a loud “MINT BUBBLES”! There is a story behind that, but honestly, since it’s funny to leave that as a WTF, I’m just gonna leave that one to the imagination. After that, we kinda separate to get to work so there’s some backslapping and high-fiving as everyone, including the band, gets hyped to go on stage. Once my band gets on stage, I put in my in-ears, take a few deep breaths, hug my manager if she’s there and then I walk out onto the stage.
