The Grateful Dead at The United Center was my very first show. I was 13 years old, and I went with my Mom! I have learned that not everyone is into that band, but the people that are, are REALLY into them! My family was no exception. Some of my earliest memories are of family parties with The Grateful Dead blasting and my aunts and uncles singing along.
The day of the show she picked me up from school and I remember so vividly she said, “Eric, there are three things that are for sure going to happen tonight. There will be a makeshift city in the United Center parking lot, we can forget about our seats when we get in, and we will definitely run into Jack.” Jack is a family friend who never missed a show….ever. We all know that person.
Sure enough, all three things happened. We entered the parking lot and lo and behold, there was a makeshift city they called shakedown street. We had nosebleed seats but found ourselves on the floor, 5 rows from the stage. On our way to the front, we ran into none other than….Jack!
As a drummer, it was so cool seeing the musicianship of two drummers onstage and how all the musicians interacted with one another while jamming. It blew me away that the band collectively agreed it was a good idea to let the drummers play a drum solo for 45 minutes straight. To this day, I am still working on making that happen at one of our shows. My bandmates are Hesitant.
