The first concert I ever went to was Katy Perry’s California Dreams tour in 2011. I was 10 years old, in 5th grade, and saw her in the tiny town of Orlando, Florida. Although my memory has deteriorated over the years, I can firmly say that it was the most magical and one of the most life-changing experiences I’ve ever had. My parents surprised me and my best friend with tickets to the show and I remember I was exploding inside when I found out who we were going to see.
Katy Perry was at the HEIGHT of her career at this point and it was no secret she was going to be as colorful and creative as one could be on this tour. I remember SO MANY costume changes and the graphics that surrounded her were so vibrant and ridiculous but in the most amazing way. There was an unnerving amount of candy canes, multicolored wigs, metallics and texture, cotton candy, spinning lollipops, and of course, Katy gave a grand finale while wearing the famous whipped cream-shooting boob cannon!
At 10 years old, I already knew music was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but at that age seeing a worldwide international tour with so much color, energy, weirdness, dynamics, authenticity, and above all, passion, just validated everything I already knew I wanted for myself even more. I saw how one woman with one voice could capture the attention and hearts of an arena filled with almost 8000 people. I realized if she could do it, I would too and that’s how I got to where I am today. Still grinding, still working, and still believing in me.
