The pre-show ritual has changed for us as we’ve played out more and become more comfortable with our live performance.
We used to be all about vocal warm-ups, running through scales, and listening to the set in the van to prepare.
It’s totally different for us now. Running through your act, pre-show is for artists who aren’t well prepared. For us, the pre-show ritual is all about feeling as dope as possible; getting into champion mode before walking onstage. People are wowed by much more than just the music. If you feel something while playing, the crowd will feel something with you. If the crowd witnesses more than just musicians playing songs in front of them, your show is no longer performance, but spectacle. Some people in the crowd aren’t even there for you, so be a God for the 45 minutes you’re on that stage and you’ll win them over.
Dustin(drums) loves listening to Nate Dogg before playing. The dude was just so cold. That’s the headspace you want to be in while you’re performing. Justin loves to watch intense scenes from gangster or samurai flicks before he goes onstage to get that conflict inside of him while playing live. A little bit of grass before a show never hurt anyone either.
