The last three shows of the tour were Buffalo, Philadelphia, and New York. Only, really, there were four shows, as we did a set for BreakThru Radio Saturday afternoon, right before our homecoming show in New York. Buffalo was looking like it was going to be a pretty rad show, as there were some people there. But there four opening bands, which meant there were six bands total. The last two were Exotic and then, finally (“headlining,” if you can call it that), us. Six hours of various forms of metal is a lot to endure, and it was a weeknight. So, not shockingly, that show turned out to be a dud, as EAPZ and us played for very few people.
Next up was Philly, a town that has, unfortunately, never been that good for us despite the seven thousand times we’ve played it. So we went in there with understandably low expectations. But for the first time, people came out, and everyone had a great time. Things came together, and it was a great show for EAPZ and Goes Cube, and we pulled out of Philly, for the first time for that particular city, not feeling dispirited.
New York was absolutely tremendous. The good folks at BTR had a great setup, gave us some breakfast beers, and led a very funny and lively interview. They then recorded and filmed a set. All of this will be cut together and up online sometime this summer. We rushed over to the Studio at Webster Hall, loaded in and soundchecked. At this point, we were fairly exhausted (we had driven back to New York after Philly, so we’d gotten very little sleep). After slogging through soundcheck, we all took a break from the music and gear, and went walking in our fair (also unfair) city. Slightly refreshed, we returned shortly before the music started so we could catch all the bands: Fashion Week (who, like us, have an EP on Coextinction Recordings), the Giraffes (who we were touring with back in ’08), and Exotic Animal Petting Zoo. Each band was in fine shape, and though I was bummed Exotic didn’t close with “Arcology,” I think they provided their finest set yet. As for us, we played to a full house, and the crowd seemed very excited to see us. The feeling was mutual, as it had been a full year since we last played New York City. Time was a little tight, so we weren’t able to play an encore, but it was an exhilarating, uplifting, raucous set. The kind that, ironically (or maybe not at all), makes you want to go on tour and do it all over again.
