Joni Mitchell:
I actually started playing classical piano before singing when I was about 6 years old. I remember my Father blasting Joni Mitchell’s song ‘Blue’ and I got my best friends Mum to teach me it that month. The woman is a songwriting genius. My folk music really started to blossom at around 12 years old. I was growing into a woman and felt that voice really made me feel comfortable about being emotional and vulnerable when I didn’t even know how to speak my feelings myself.
Daughter:
How could I look pass the first band to ever get me into writing my own music? I could never forget teaching myself ‘Youth’ on guitar at about 14 years old. I used to use those same chords and write my own melodies and lyrics over the top until I felt more comfortable writing. Daughter was the first concert I ever saw as a teenager in church in Sydney. My first ever boyfriend bought me tickets to her show and I remember sitting there in silence with the rest of the crowd and crying my eyes out. She spoke one word the whole concert saying ‘sorry’ when she stuffed up a chord and it was about then that I kinda fell In love with her.
Father John Misty:
THIS MAN. Pushes every limit there is in the ‘songwriting’ book and manages to make something so ear intense and captivating without even having a chorus, like what? I saw him perform in Sydney and also at this one bawled my eyes out (I know I need to stop). ‘Real Love’ has played on multiple road trips with so many loved ones and I can’t help but get nostalgic and think how amazing life is and how lucky I am to be alive, its so cheesy but I guess the song is a little bit too. I love it.
