Throughout my performing career, I’ve had different rituals to set myself in the mood, but some specifics have stuck. I begin preparing about a week before the gig by consciously increasing the time I spend on singing, eating (somewhat) healthier, drinking loads of water and doing more yoga. That being said I didn’t do any of these things before my list gig opening for Johnossi in Stockholm, and I got tonsillitis the day of the show, I take that as a sign. Stick to your pre-show-health-routine, and every other ritual.
When it’s the day before the show I tend to watch a movie or a documentary with someone that is currently inspiring me. It’s usually La Vie En Rose. It’s actually always La Vie En Rose, at least it has been my go-to movie before a show for the past two years… Before that, I used to watch Blues Brothers! It puts me in a mood to perform even if my life is falling apart.
The day of the gig I make a thermos with my special brew that I bring with me. I mix hot water with a little bit of lemon, honey, mineral salt and olive oil. It’s important that it’s not too hot, burning your tongue is the worst. I drink it throughout the day and it just makes my voice feel great. I’ve started to depend on having that thermos with me to feel safe in knowing my voice is fine, I’m going to do fine.
Lastly, before a show, I try to let go of all thoughts of pressure by keeping myself busy, but I always need a moment to myself right before call time, just like, to stare at myself in a mirror, bringing a clear focus to all the energy I feel before a show. I do a few high jumps and hug my bandmates and then I go out on stage.
