GRIEVED - PRESHOW RITUALS

In this Preshow Rituals segment, the deathcore band, GRIEVED, reveals what they do before taking the stage. You can check out the rituals below:

Like every band that frequently plays live shows, we have our own set of pre-show rituals that we do to prepare for the stage. We learned very quickly that partying/taking shots before playing is probably the worst thing to do before a performance - all that does is leave you feeling sluggish and winded faster. Now, we like to take it easy and save the fun for after, which includes drinking tons of water, stretching, and some brief meditation to help get in the right mindset before we release it all on stage. Maintaining a healthy mind and body before a show is key, which we will explain more in depth below!

SAY NO TO ALCOHOL. We get it, and we are right there with you when we say we love to party and have a good time, especially at a show. There is something special about seeing your favorite band with your emotions elevated by alcohol that can connect you with the set a little more (or will make you cry in my experience) but as a performer, this is not the case. Drinking before playing a show can be more harmful than beneficial and will leave you walking off stage questioning if you really gave it your all. Concentration is important when you're up there in front of a crowd, and there is nothing more frustrating than missing a note, singing the wrong lyric or missing a queue all due to being inebriated. Aside from that, it makes you feel gross and sluggish while performing! It's best to drink as much water as possible beforehand to ensure you are hydrated, rather than dehydrated by alcohol.

DO YOUR STRETCHES. This one is pretty self-explanatory. When you're my age, things really do start catching up to you physically and joint/back problems do exist. It's better to not initiate back pain or give yourself a nice little case of whiplash because you went a little too hard without taking the proper precautions. We get it, you get in the zone and don't realize what you're doing until it's too late sometimes. It's critical to stretch your neck, arms, legs, and back before hitting the stage because otherwise, you will regret the next day (or few days).

MEDITATE. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and being an artist in our genre definitely does take a toll on your mental health at times due to the nature of the music itself. In our case, our music dives a little deeper into emotions and touches on subjects such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or even outward hatred towards certain subjects. Digging so deep into yourself to create this type of music can have negative effects since you are constantly focusing on those subjects to bring them out, so meditation is part of what helps clear your mind. Before hitting the stage, making sure you have a clear and focused mind is just as important as anything else, and will ensure your performance is always where it needs to be.
