My first concert was Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown tour, at their Auckland show. They were the first band I really got into from a young age, first hearing ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ on the radio. As a young kid something about the angst and darkness in the music really connected with me, and of course, the simple, catchy melodies were an instant hook!
I listened to the then-new album on repeat after getting it for my birthday, then I found out my best mates dad would take us all the way up to Auckland to see them if we paid back the tickets before the end of the year. We succeeded, and I remember sneaking into the standing area right by the stage for the first half of the show until security came and made us go back to our seats at the back. They were a fantastic first concert, impeccably rehearsed, powerful stage presence, true rock stars!
