A few years back, I was in Ireland recording my second EP ‘White Threads’ in the magical venue Connolly’s of Leap in West Cork and the opportunity arose to support Hozier for two shows in Dublin. He had just released his song ‘Take Me to Church’ and it was a big show for Andy and his band, as he had recently signed to a new label and some important people were going to be there. I was excited because the venue was a beautiful church and there’s always something special about playing in big, old spaces.
On the first night, everything went well with sound check and set up. However, a few minutes into my set, just in the last line of a song, the power cut off and I realized the PA had switched off! Immediately, I saw the sound engineers running around trying to work out what was happening, but I was stuck up there without power in front of the audience! Luckily, I’ve done a lot of busking and natural acoustics of the church were made to amplify voices, so I sang a few songs with just my guitar and the “church reverb”.
It turned out to be quite special, as the lack of mic brought the audience in and we sang together, just like a congregation on a Sunday. Eventually, the engineers switched the power back on and I performed the rest of my set with the help of the PA. We found out after the show that Andy had tried to make a cup of tea backstage and as he switched on the kettle, it overpowered the old church’s circuitry and left us without electricity. He apologized profusely afterward, but I learned that every now and then, a little bit of singing away from the mic can be a great way to engage a crowd!
