I’m going to preface this by saying this is going to be a total Celine Dion fan article. She is a guilty pleasure of mine that I have no guilt over.
Celine Dion has always been the music my mother and I bonded over. And fortunately, she is also the first real concert I watched with my mum. I can’t remember how old I was, about 13, I think. I remember it so distinctly because Celine had gotten sick and moved the date of her Brisbane show to March 30th – both my mum’s and Celine’s birthday. At one point in the concert, all 13,500 people in the Brisbane Entertainment Centre were singing “Happy Birthday” to Celine, but my mum and I pretended it was for her too.
Fast forward to being 19 years old and living in Orange County, California. For my birthday, I decided to head to Las Vegas and watch a Celine Dion concert at Caesar’s Palace in honor of my mum. I went by myself because no one wanted to go with me. I WAS NOT GOING TO LET THAT STOP ME. So, I bought my ticket early in a favorable middle front seat. Somehow, the seat choice broke up a group of elderly Siberian women because they were to my left, to my right and talking at each other through me. We tried to chat, but due to language barriers, we could only communicate our Celine fandom and that they were visiting from Siberia. In the middle of the concert, Celine sang a song dedicated to her father and began to cry. Suddenly, I feel both my hands being held. I looked over to find all of us holding hands down the line, linking me into their emotional journey. I looked over to the lady on my left sobbing, then looked to the lady on my right wailing and I couldn’t help but turn into a puddle myself. We might’ve had language barriers, but we all spoke Celine.
I’ve seen Celine several times since then. Most recently, when she came back to Brisbane. Almost 10 years later, I returned to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre with my mum. I forked out on VIP seating and Celine delivered.
Jaguar Jonze is always Team Celine. My heart will go on.
