It wasn’t until my late teens I had actually gone to my first “proper concert”. Being a huge fan of ballads, I found myself knowing Westlife’s album Back Home, word for word! I remember seeing an advertisement that they were touring in Newcastle and I had to get tickets. Along with two other friends, we decided we had to get front-row tickets. These were the days where you would go to the box office outside the venue and buy tickets, not like today where you can sit in a virtual queue at home and buy online!
We figured the only way to get front row was to be at the box office early or in our case a whole two days earlier! We took our tents, pitched up right outside the box office, ordered Chinese takeout, and slept there until the tiny window opened at 9am! We managed to bag those front row seats ?. I always laugh when I look back because the local news channel came down to do a story and interviewed my friend in her dressing gown, she made the 6 o’clock news.
I remember being mesmerized by the production in the show, the pyrotechnics, and the visuals. The huge buzz in the room on the first song was incredible and I left feeling so inspired. It was probably then when I realized this is what I must do for the rest of my life, and to be honest, I’ve never looked back!
After taking a break, Westlife is back releasing new material and I believe they’ll be touring again so who knows, I may have to dig my tent from out of the basement!
