The most memorable prank that I can remember was played on me! When I first started out on the road, I had joined my dad’s band. They were already very well established and packed the house wherever they went. I had known all of the guys in the band for a long time and was pretty much everyone’s little brother.
I used to get caught up partying and talking to girls at the end of the night and would forget to put my guitar away. Early on the guys kept telling me to make sure that I put it away so it wouldn’t get stolen, but I would always forget because I was too busy worrying about the girls and the parties.
So, when we were at a bar in Canada, one of the guys came up and asked me where my guitar was. I looked up on the stage, thinking I’d see it on the stand where I left it, but the stand was empty. I FREAKED!! I ran up to the stage and started frantically searching everywhere, but there was no guitar!!
The guys in the band and crew were searching as well, but it was nowhere to be found. To say I was upset is an understatement. The guitar was a ’69 Gold Top Les Paul that my dad had bought me for my birthday a couple years before. I was beside myself and started crying because I had lost my most prized possession. The tears turned to anger and there was a huge flight case that we were all standing around. I reared back and drove my knee into it and just about broke my knee. It was then that they asked me if I checked underneath the stage.
I limped over, threw up the stage skirting and there it was, safe and sound. After the tension died down, they laughed and laughed about how crazy I got searching all over for it. I, on the other hand, was not laughing.
They said, “dammit, we told you to put it away before someone stole it and you wouldn’t listen!”
I guess there was a guy standing over by my side of the stage eyeballing my guitar, so the guys went over and put it away. Then they said, “that’s it! Time to teach this boy a lesson!”
I was the “new guy” and being that I was like everybody’s little brother they loved to pick on me, but they also cared about me and wanted to make sure I learned the right way to do things. I don’t really remember how I got them back, but I’m sure being my wise-ass self, I did something! Needless to say, I walked around with a limp for a few days because of the bruise I had on my knee from hitting the road case!
