Trying to get this list down to 3 or 4 artists is pretty tough, but there are a few that stick out more than the rest.
The first artist that came to my head immediately is Ryan Adams. His first two albums were the soundtrack to a few great summers and a couple of bad breakups. The first album, “Heartbreaker” is for sure, one of my favourite albums of all time. The raw vocal sound got me hooked instantly and “Oh My Sweet Carolina” is usually my go-to if I stumble into an open mic night somewhere. He’s the kind of songwriter that constantly reminds you that simplicity is everything and you don’t need to overcomplicate songs with production.
Next up would be Arcade Fire. I used to deliver pizzas while at Uni for extra cash, and I had a copy of Neon Bible that never left my CD player and somehow kept me sane. I’ve fallen in love with everything they’ve put out since. Unfortunately, they’ve been one of those bands that I’ve always missed when they’re playing nearby so being able to see them night after night would make up for all the shows I’ve missed!
The last act is pretty specific and would need a time machine but – B.B King with The Crusaders. They made an album together called “Take It Home”, which was the album that got me into blues and funk and really changed my entire outlook on music. If I remember, there was a live video from Montreux where they played the whole album. I was lucky enough to catch B.B’s last show in Edinburgh, and I always worried that seeing a legend like that would never live up to my expectations – but the whole show blew my mind from start to end. I’d imagine B.B King would be a fountain of knowledge on tour, I mean – he toured nearly his whole life, I’m sure he’d have a bit of banter!
I’m not sure how we would all fit on the same bill but it would definitely be a riot, and I’d imagine there would be some crazy soundcheck jamming to go with it. I mean, B.B King and Arcade fire at one show? Mental.
