Jared & The Mill – TOUR TIPS

In this Tour Tips segment, the western indie rock band, Jared & The Mill, give you their tips for being on tour. You can check out the feature, after the break.

1.) Jared – It’s so important to not take things too seriously. As you drive around and exhaust yourself it’s really easy to start worrying or grow irritable about little things that normally wouldn’t bother you. While you wait for everybody to be well rested and able to have a good constructive conversation, joke around, laugh at your own mistakes and keep it as light hearted as possible.

2.) Chuck – Touring can be an exercise in repetition at times without you ever realizing it. Podcasts and stand up comedy are a good way to learn new things, break up the monotony, and remember how to talk about things besides tour/band/music. So stock up on the funny and smart stuff, and skip the fifth play through of “The Best of Hall and Oates” every once in a while.

3.) Michael – If you have any interest in cameras I would highly recommend bringing one and taking photos while you’re on the road. It’s a hobby you’ll never master, and it’s free, well, once you’ve bought one and if you’re not shooting film. Getting away from the van or the venue and walking around town a bit documenting where you are is a good destresser. Also, having the photos of your bandmates, the endless green rooms, venues, cities, and in between places is nice after a tour, at least in my experience.

4.) Josh – Get good at yelping. You don’t always get a lot of time to eat, so it’s important to maximize the opportunities you get. Our favorite signs include small size, a market attached, and one $ sign. Skim the reviews and assess why people think it’s good, then laugh at the stupid reasons why they think it’s bad. Look out for overly bitchy reviews about how the server only asked how their day was once.

5.) Larry – Don’t waste your money on silly little things. Not every famous restaurant, touristy landmark, and sightseeing entrance fee is worth the price and if you want to get the true sense of a region you’re usually better off skipping those. You can also save big bucks over the course of a tour by refilling water bottles and bringing a reusable coffee mug. It’s surprising how quickly $4 a coffee and $2.50 a water bottle adds up over a 6-week run.
