Johnny Gates – CRAZY TOUR STORIES

In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the indie rock artist, Johnny Gates, shares one of his stories from being on the road. You can check out the story, after the break.

Ok so with this story, the craziest part about it was the actual tour. We had been doing a ton of van and trailer touring and slowly started to play theaters, but we had no idea what was about to happen.

I had just moved to LA from Nashville, and I didn’t even have an apartment yet. I was crashing with friends, and my band was still in Nashville. Anyway, I got a call from our manager. He asked me if I liked Rod Stewart.

Sooo quick side story – my mom is OBSESSED with Rod Stewart. It’s her absolute favorite artist and she’s seen him play like 10 times.

Ok back to the story. I told him yea I did, and he’s like “well you’re going on tour with him”. And I was just kinda shocked. So after I returned to earth, I got to make the coolest phone call ever, to my mom, and tell her we were going on tour with her favorite artist ever. Took her like 20 minutes to actually believe me, but it was such a special moment for us.

I flew back to Nashville, met up with my band, rehearsed, and drove our van and trailer to link up with the tour, and we played arenas for the first time that summer. And the best part was, my parents flew out to the first show and got to hang out backstage with Rod, and see our first-ever arena show. I’ll never forget that tour.
