Kady Rain – PRESHOW RITUALS

I do a lot of weird stuff before a show. I’ll start preparing a few days before, first by combating my allergies. As a singer, I want to make sure my voice sounds clear, but I have SUPER bad allergies and living in Austin, Texas, land of the tree pollen, doesn’t help at all. So, I’ll go to acupuncture and get a treatment and I’ll take Chinese herbs starting a few days before, and I’ll drink LOTS and lots of hot water and tea to flush my system and get my vocal cords and sinuses in check. I also steam my face and do nasal rinses to clear out any excess crud from my face. It’s so glamorous, I know.

On the day of the show, I’ll wake up, steam my face or nasal rinse, drink a ton of tea with ginger, gargle with salt water, and do my vocal warm-ups, which consist of mostly doing “WHOOOOOO” noises from the top to the bottom of my range and doing vocal fry. I’m assured time and time again that my various roommates adore hearing me doing my warmups immensely…but I doubt it. I sound like that crazy old person at a basketball game.

After warmups, Ben and I will make a set list and run through the songs a few times to make sure we’ve got them down because sometimes we’ll have to play a song we’ve just finished and I don’t want to forget the words! Then I spend a few hours tearing my closet apart finding the perfect outfit to wear (I usually end up choosing a piece from Black Milk Clothing or rock one of my custom pieces from Witchxxdoctor) and spend about an hour or so doing my makeup and hair, up to an hour before the show. Right before the show, we usually take a selfie. We don’t have any sort of ritual or huddle or anything, we just try to make sure we don’t mess it up, haha. I can’t eat up to 4 or so hours before a show because I’ll burp through the whole thing, and nobody wants to hear a burp in the middle of a high note, so I’m usually ravenous by the time our show’s over and then it’s burger time. We pretty much always go for burgers at a local joint, P.Terry’s, after a show.
