If I could tour alongside my dream collection of artists it would with Villagers, Alt-J, and Roger Waters.
I’d take the opportunity to set up a tour of outdoor concerts and blow the entire budget on bringing in a stupidly high level of production; The quadrophonic sound system Roger likes, his flying pig, the helicopter and the Wall will naturally also be there. The rest of us will have our own flying things and tricks – not quite as good as Roger’s though, as he will obviously headline. I love the idea of the cinematic quality to all three of these acts and love even more the idea of throwing myself in with them.
I would start the show with my one-man band thing. I have an older song called ‘Window to the Sky’ which would begin everything. The whole place would be completely dark and a hologram of a window filled with bright blue daylight would appear above the crowd. Then there’d be some cool, old-school spotlight on me until the chorus when we’d fire off some huge vertical fireworks either side. I’d finish with my new single ‘Second Hand Car’ and would invite a random audience member up onto the stage to sing the chorus with me and then gift them with an old shitty car and have a central pathway through the crowd for them to drive off into the hills/forest. I’d need to be careful to pick a sober person…
Then Villagers would come on. I first saw Connor J O’Brien in a small junky ‘garage’ theater on Vancouver Island. I opened for him that night and sat in an old dusty red seat eating popcorn having my mind blown! To replicate this wonderful memory of mine, holograms would project the inside of the Duncan Garage Showroom on Vancouver Island and the venue host, Longevity John. He’d have a huge joint in his mouth and his 14 Shih Tzu dogs. Then the crowd would get showered in popcorn and Villagers would play with the live set up they had on that album ‘Where Have You Been All My Life’; because that was incredible. He’d finish with his cover of ‘Wichita Lineman’ and everyone would get showered with more popcorn – though during the show people would hand out boxes for everyone to catch the popcorn in.
After that, Alt J would come on. I first heard their album whilst touring Quebec in the middle of a harsh winter. I liked this backdrop to my discovery and fell in love with their music. A large icy wall would rise up now and cover the entire stage. It would look a little bit like the wall in Game of Thrones. In the middle would be a small opening where Alt J would start with ‘Taro’. An enormous stream of multi colored confetti would come down in the chorus to contrast the epic winter wall around them. Strobes would then start going crazy and thousands of colored lights would fly out in every direction as they built with ‘In Cold Blood’. They’d finish with ‘Tessellate’ and everyone would have small triangular key chains that glowed in synch colors like Coldplay did once. They’d hold them together to create an enormous triangle. The ice would slowly melt off the enormous wall and alt J would walk off leaving the empty stage free for Roger to walk out and give a performance of ‘The Wall’ in full.
We’d then all have radical after parties each night and all the production and lighting crew would get free drinks and be given really nice hotel rooms so they kept having a good time and putting on such a ridiculous show.
