On show days, I try to wake up early to make sure that I have time to exercise, meditate, and eat a good breakfast. I know coffee is bad for vocals, but I can’t live without it, so I chug a HUGE coffee during breakfast haha. If there are any loose ends or other small things I need to get done that day, I’ll get them done right after so that they’re off my mind. Then, honestly, I spend the afternoon chilling and pretending like the show isn’t happening so that I don’t get nervous! Haha.
Then about an hour before I have to leave for load-in, I steam my vocal cords and do vocal warmups. I dress in casual clothes to the venue and bring my stage clothes and – most importantly – my Gatorade water bottle. I’ve had so many over the years, I absolutely love them and no one gets it, haha, but they’re the best!
Then the band and I will load all the gear in and do a soundcheck. Afterward, I’ll change into my stage clothes and then socialize with the band and any friends or family if they’re at the show. Once it hits about 15 minutes before showtime, I immediately look for a quiet private space, which at a lot of venues just ends up being the bathroom haha. I calm my nerves, give myself a little pep talk, and get into a good headspace. I’m a really emotional person, so it’s important for me to get into a good emotional state and kind of ground myself. That way I’m less overwhelmed by everything going on.
Finally, it’s time to be on standby! The band is very chill and just hangs right off stage, but I need to burn off my nervous energy so I’m always running around, doing jumping jacks, just anything physical haha. I pretty much run right onto the stage from there and am stoked and ready to play!
